Catchphrases come and go, but I’m hoping you will find this one a keeper. ¡Pura Vida! is pronounced (poo-rah vee-dah).
Wikipedia offers a great definition. ¡Pura Vida! “encapsulates the prevailing ideology of living in peace, in a calm, uncluttered manner, appreciating a life surrounded by nature, family and friends.”
It’s an emotion. It’s an attitude. It’s happiness.
It’s a mantra!
The term “Pura Vida” arrived on the scene in 1956 after a Mexican movie entitled ¡Pura Vida! was released.
In the movie, the main character uses the phrase throughout the movie to stay optimistic, happy, and full of life, despite all the negative circumstances around him.
Thanks to this movie, the phrase ¡Pura Vida! is the unofficial motto to the 2nd happiest countries on Earth.
Costa Ricans don’t just let the term bring them a good life, it’s the way they use it in their everyday attitude to make them happy.
They Speak ¡Pura Vida! through every type of conversation.
Intentionally using this catchphrase helps them bring gratitude and thankfulness into existence for the things they do have in life, instead of dwelling on the negative, and the things they don’t have.
And we can too!
What attitude do you bring to your everyday life?
Would a phrase like ¡Pura Vida! be helpful?
Whether it is watching a sunset, embracing a loved one, sharing a good laugh, drinking fine wine, or pausing for a moment of silence; all of those moments are described as ¡Pura Vida! which literally translates to Pure Living.
The Happy Planet Index recently ranked the Central American country of Costa Rica as #2 on its list.
Based on a score compiled from the life expectancy, ecological footprint and well-being of individuals…
The Happy Planet Index aims to show that what modern humans think brings happiness often does not – and perhaps we should pursue it differently.
Living a ¡Pura Vida! lifestyle can help us forget about our problems and connect back to ourselves. It just might give us more beauty, purpose, balance, and unity within our lives.
Going from hectic to relaxing, connecting, energizing, naturalizing, loving, recognizing, appreciating the small moments in life.
Costa Ricans (Ticos) believe that ‘life is about quality as well as quantity.’
It would be lovely if we could all jet off to Costa Rica, but I would suggest we find a way of unearthing our ¡Pura Vida! (the pure life) a little closer to home.
Because honestly folks…no matter how much of a mess your life may seem, there is always someone else who’s life would make yours look like a vacation in paradise.
What word(s) or phrases do you use to express an optimistic attitude?
How would you describe your lifestyle?
Can’t think of any?
