Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has often shared the best piece of advice she’s ever received.
It originally came from her mother-in-law on her wedding day. She was married 56 years.
“Sometimes it helps to be a little deaf.”
However, Ginsburg believes that this same advice helps not only in marriage, but in life.
โWhen a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance oneโs ability to persuade.โ
In my opinion, this is very good advice. Letting some things go in one ear and out the other can be many a relationship saver.
Especially the really important ones!
Think of it this way, we’ve all had a little practice doing this anyway.
Remember when you were little and your parents said something that you really didn’t want to hear?!
That is a great bit of wisdom. If Ms. Ginsberg had listened to every comment made to her by biased men because she is a woman, she never would have made it to the position in the courts that she achieved.

Of course when you stop hearing very well you see the joy of being able to hear regardless of what it is.
